Large Eddy Simulations of a Stratified Shear Layer

چکیده
The performance of the large eddy simulation (LES) approach in predicting the evolution of a shear layer in the presence of stratification is evaluated. The LES uses a dynamic procedure to compute subgrid model coefficients based on filtered velocity and density fields. Two simulations at different Reynolds numbers are simulated on the same computational grid. The fine LES simulated at a low Reynolds number produces excellent agreement with direct numerical simulations (DNS): the linear evolution of momentum thickness and bulk Richardson number followed by an asymptotic approach to constant values is correctly represented and the evolution of the integrated turbulent kinetic energy budget is well captured. The model coefficients computed from the velocity and the density fields are similar and have a value in range of 0:01 0:02. The coarse LES simulated at a higher Reynolds number Re1⁄4 50,000 shows acceptable results in terms of the bulk characteristics of the shear layer, such as momentum thickness and bulk Richardson number. Analysis of the turbulent budgets shows that, while the subgrid stress is able to remove sufficient energy from the resolved velocity fields, the subgrid scalar flux and thereby the subgrid scalar dissipation are underestimated by the model. We present a new diagnostic mixing length for a turbulence scheme based on a prognostic equation for the turbulence kinetic energy. The formulation adds a local vertical wind shear term to the non-local buoyancy-based mixing length currently used in the research mesoscale model Meso-NH. The combined effects better represent local mixing for stably stratified flows where the wind shear plays a m...

Large-eddy simulation (LES) is used to investigate turbulence in a marginally-unstable stratified shear layer motivated by the observation of deep-cycle turbulence in the upper Equatorial Undercurrents. The initial condition consists of uniform shear and stratification profiles, and a constant gradient Richardson number Rig = 0.25. A constant wind stress forces turbulence in the upper surface l...

Modifications of turbulence regime in the sheared convective boundary layer (CBL) by a number of external nonbuoyant forcings are studied experimentally in a thermally stratified wind tunnel and numerically by means of large eddy simulation. This type of CBL is observed in the atmosphere when an originally neutral or stable air mass is advected over a heated underlying surface. Emphasis in the ...

A stratified bottom Ekman layer over a nonsloping, rough surface is studied using a three-dimensional unsteady large eddy simulation to examine the effects of an outer layer stratification on the boundary layer structure. When the flow field is initialized with a linear temperature profile, a three-layer structure develops with a mixed layer near the wall separated from a uniformly stratified o...
